Because we were created by God, to have this God-shaped hole in our hearts, that only a God can fill...Without the knowledge of Jesus Christ and Yahweh God, man has found counterfeit 'gods' to fill the hole..And thereby recieve counterfeit blessings..

The short answer: It's in our genes....

The long answer:
Religion and god is as real as the tooth fairy....primitive man needed the 'religious experience' to survive in a hostile universe. The unknown was explained by the supernatural, the idea of an afterlife cushioned people from the grim aspects of death, in short, it was a survival mechanism developed within the temporal lobe of all human brains.

Modern man has developed rational thought and controls much of the environment, to the extent of knowing how 'things operate'. But obsolete genes do not die overnight, therefore you'll always be seeing people believing in religion, god and the supernatural.

I read about some interesting studies by scientists of the temporal lobe regions that are 'mis-firing' or giving off 'unbalanced' neuroligical signals. Some of the studies are intrigueing, they can duplicate 'religious experiences' in blind tests of humans.

It was already known that the more primitive limbic system of our brains contain the raw emotion where our religious beliefs spring forth. The development of the cerebral cortex (or the thinking and rational part of the brain) is only a recent development in humans, say the last 40,000-100,000 years.

It is also well known that the 'god-gene' (for lack of a better description) is triggered during times of duress, high anxiety, near death or starvation, and other high emotional episodes. It was our survival instinct that developed this so-called god-gene. Now, scientists can atificially trigger that response under laboratory conditions by narrowing the focus to the temporal regions of the brain. Further studies are being conducted to study this gene and its effect on our development as a species.

If we were created by a higher power, he would put that desire into us, wouldn't he?

As for so many different religions..... many different reasons.....here are a few......

1) Without knowledge, humans will do their best to find a way to express that desire.

2) Then, you have those who do not like the religion they are in, so they break off and form their own religion.

3) And, there is also, one of those creations of God rebelled against God and wants everyone else to rebel along with him (seems to be quite a few around here who do agree with him, doesn't it?)
reference: (KJV) 2 Corinthians 4:4: "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of the Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

4) And, then you have those who refuse to acknowledge that desire, because they see what some of those who do try to fill that desire do and how they treat others, etc.. (I refer you back to #3)

5) And, you also have those who make up their mind to "do their own thing" and refuse to listen to the other side and see if some of those over there just might have something worth listening to, and so, instead, hurl out insults at those who have confidence in what they believe. (Here again, I refer you to #3)

Neither your assertion is real, nor the fairly some answerer's perspectives are marvelous. no one has ever forecasted something approximately destiny. No faith has ever defined different faith for worse human beings. Its the human beings who explains it in yet differently. None human beings have the superb to call another a Mleccha. All religions are solid if observed wisely.

We all have a spiritual hunger, a curiosity, a desire to know, an urge to find out our roots; where do we come from. Religions are mans attempt to find the answers. Jesus came to give us the answer. He is the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the father except trough Him. We were created by God to be his children, that's why we are so God dependent. We were created by Him and for Him. We find our rest in Him only. God bless you!!!

Because as a whole, we feel vulnerable. We need a high er power to vindicate ourselves- and to give ourselves direction.

Having a higher power gives us somthing to strive for- usually, when we come acrossed a higher power, we like to thinkof them as perfection- and would like to strive for the same thing. Complete balance, infallibility- these are usually qulities that can be found in our higher beings, that are rarely, if ever, found in human beings.

Also, higher beings make us feel like we have a sense of purpose- they give us rules to follow, and through that we feel useful, like we are here for a reason, and not that we just happened, and now we're here- so we're not standing here saying "Well, I'm here, now what should I do?"

While there are people out there who are content to just 'be', there are people who need a reason, who need to know they have a purpose.

I highly recommed reading the writings of Ludwig Feuerbach. He was a German philosopher who took a good long look at the roots of religion and came away with a lot of answers that make a lot of sense.

Read the book, "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Cambell. It is a companion with the series on PBS. I think you will be enlighted more by reading it, than the information gleamed on this site.

because a long time ago, when people ate food that wasn't loaded with chemicals and they didn't have crappy jobs to go to and money to worry about, they were surrounded by nature all the time. when your body isn't bogged down with worries and unnatural chemicals, spiritual experience just happens and it becomes obvious that there is a higher power
