A UK postcode is either 6,7 or 8digits and numbers long. The first letter or two letters refers to the city, town or closest area. For example, Manchester is M, Birmingham is B and Bristol is BS. This doesn't apply to London, though, where the postcodes are things like SW (for south west). Then, it's a number or 2. This refers to the district. Manchester city centre is M60 (it is not 60 miles from the centre, like someone else suggested!) or M1, depending on which part of the city. Then there is a number- this refers to a smaller region within the area. Then there are 2 letters that refer to an exact building or collection of buildings. Normally, some of the houses down the same road will share a postcode. There are 57,000,000 people in England- there's no way we could have one postcode. It wouldn't make sense!
