I will be moving to the UK soon, and I want to get a cell phone while I'm there (about a year). Should I purchase a tri-band phone here in the US and bring it there, which will probably cost me $200, or will I get better deals there? Cause what I heard was the minutes they give in the UK may not be enough if you sign a contract. Has anyone had any experience using a cell phone that way?

I bought a mobile (that's a cell phone to us North Americans) from Virgin Moible for about £25. I needed to get a SIM card and then went with the pay as you go program. If you are calling to Canada or US, they will charge you 20p (20 pence) a minute, where as T-Mobile will charge upto £1.20 a minute. Calls within the UK were as low as 5p a minute, and texts were free between Virgin Mobile phones. Though most things in the UK are more expensive than North America, I think you get a better deal with mobiles there.

don't bother about getting a tri-band phone if it costs you $200.
PAYG (pay as you go) phones are available from about £45 including some credit, than you top up your credit. For international call I would suggest that you use calling-cards available in many shops.
If you really want to sign a contract, you can get free phones for about £20 per month with a minutes and texts included. The included minutes however are only for UK networks, calling the US or abroad will cost you dearly.

Buy a mobile phone in the UK, because else you'll probably have to pay to receive incoming calls and texts from the US if you're using a US network provider (as you'll also have to pay for using an equivalent English one). This is called a roaming charge. Although there's a new law coming in concerning use of mobiles in the EU, this might not apply to American phones. And mobiles can be very cheap in the UK, but obviously, if you want a better phone, you'll have to pay more.
