depends on what you want for a new user get mepis linux for something harder get red hat, there are hundreds. search for linux downloads or something along those lines...i use both mepis and red hat
ignore the one guy under me, linux is a great choice to dual boot windows xp + mepis linux or red hat that way you can choose the os you want to use when you start the computer. its the best of both worlds...
any questions message me
search for mepis 3.3.1 or something its on one disk compressed and has everything you will need and you can ge more if wanted
i use both windows and linux, i need both for my web design and graphic s. there are advantages for both that is why i say dual boot.
windows only crashes if you dont know how to use it...properly i have never had a system crash. but yes linux is less prone to viruses with out haveing to get virus protection separatley

Linux users fall into two groups
those who do not like the Microsoft
those who want to be different.
Every few months or so I get a copy of Linux that's given away with a computer magazine ( Linux Format ), and see how easily it installs onto a spare hard drive.
More often than not the drivers are unavailable for the graphics card. Eventually drivers are found and I install Open Office.
From a memory stick I try and read a MS word document, just to see how close or otherwise Open Office formats the document.
After a couple of hours of playing about, I abandon Linux and go back to XP Pro, and think Linux has a long way to go before I will consider using it.
If you are having problems with XP, ensure all the patches are up to date, AVS is up to date. Look in the device manager and ensure there are no conflicts. Ensure you have the latest graphic card drivers.
Also ensure all the fans in your system are working properly.

It is better than XP, in some way. It is less prone to viruses, and malwares, and is more stable (thus less crashes)
I don't reccommend UNIX, as Unix is already too obselete. I reccommend Linux if you're already fed up with XP.
However, there is some things, which needs to be straightened first. First, linux is not an OS, it is an OS kernel (Core of an OS, most important part of an OS), meaning Linux itself is virtually unusable for day-to-day purpose. but, there are distros, various distros, most of which are free, that is an OS based on Linux Kernel. These distros are the one that you'd be looking for.
For beginners, I'd reccomend Ubuntu, which you can download (for free, except Internet Connection, of course) from: http://www.ubuntu.com/

You can get linux at the following sites:
http://www.linuxiso.org/
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/suse_linux/index.html
www.ubuntu.com
Linux is more secure than windows, no viruses, it's free or very cheap, it's not as bloated and is a lot more configurable, and once you have learned how to use it in some ways it's easier to use, also if an application crashes which isn't too often the app can be killed without having to reboot. All in all I think it's a better OS.

it is always good to use xp while matters come head to head in compatibility. Linux / unix is not much like win or mac or it is recommended to use xp. if your system crashes it means it has virus and other spwares in your hard disk. try removing them soon. and wish you have a nice system.
or else if you want to use linux visit ubuntu.com for a free ubuntu os and a live Cd.

You must have a compatibily issue.
UNIX is a Program code--not for you or I. Leave that one alone.
Linux is developed by Red Hat out of Raleigh NC. You can find LINUX on the web at linux.com
Is good but you will have to work out your own bugs....not for the feint of heart.
Best--why dont you contact Bestbuy.com...get the geek patrol to come visit you. It will be cheaper and less of a hassle unless you know a neighborhood geek you trust!
Buying more (or getting free) software may not do anything but cause you more problems!

If you live in the UK pretty much any WH Smith sell loads of linux magazines, these tend to come with a dvd with some version of linux on it.
Or you can grab a copy of Ubuntu Linux (I use it) from http://www.ubuntu.com
Or join a local linux user group, the folks there will be happy to set you up, just google for one near you.

You can get SUSE Linux from Novell. It is part of the standard product listing. Suse 10 is out now.
http://www.novell.com/linux/
For Desktop software you have a few options, including star office.
Look at what Bristol City Council have done.

I would think you would have to go get a new one. How long do you play it for? If you play it for a very long time it will crash. So don't play it. But if it just keeps on crashing then just go get a new one. Bye!! ttyl.
Sincerely,
Samantha Thompson
