Absolutely. What a quagmire you can get in very quickly if you accept everything in the Bible as literal truth e.g stoning women who commit adultery while letting the man of scot free or all that weird stuff about God being carted around literally from place to place.

You are in no better case if you accept the Bible as human interpretation of the divine will, because that has opened the door to some very dodgy doctrines.

There is also the problem of people putting forth their own versions of events to make a point as literal or historical truth was not an issue in those days. Historians in biblical times were intent on making moral points rather than reportage. If you construct a time line for the four gospels they do not match up with each other or with examinable written records such as Chinese astronomical records, or Roman tax records. A good example is the villification of poor old Herod who never conducted a mass slaughter of infants, whatever the Bible says, although you were none to safe if you were related to him. A cracking good story though, you could see why people would want it in.

For me, it comes down to this, the ten commandments plus the teachings of Jesus are a pretty good set of rules to live by, while the rest gives plenty of material for debate and discussion.
