We adopted a baby kitten yesterday and she obviously is undernourished. I have seen the high calorie "goo" in the pet store, but wondered if there was anything we could make at home that would be appropriate.

She is weaned, but very small (she looked to be the runt in the box of kittens outside the 7-11, which is why I took her-- I knew we could get her healthy and give her a good home, plus I'm a sucker for the underdog).
Her ribs and spine protrude a little too much, so I know she needs more calories. But she is eating well so far and we've been checking her and the feces for worms constantly-- I think she is OK there. If we can't put some meat on her bones in a couple of days, we will take her to the vet.

Great suggestions!
We are lucky that we live in an area where fleas are basically unheard of- its too dry, and too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.
I grew up in SoCal though, so I remember fleas all to well.

Be careful with the baby food (an OK suggestion) it must not contain ANY onion or garlic powder.

You are not going to fatten her up in a few days. You will want a vet to check her out soon and start on her "baby" shots anyway.

The object should be not to "fatten her up" but to give her the best possible nutrition. Cheap foods have way too much corn which will make her gain weight and not give her the nourishment she needs to be a healthy cat.

Go to a small, owner-operated pet store and look over the foods there and get advice from the owners. Most of them carry the highest quality foods and they can recommend something to you. A kitten really likes to have meat in her diet. Dry foods can come later, maybe for free feeding during the day.

Most of the time you can not see the worms in their poo. Sometimes yes but you need to take a fecal sample into your vet and have him check it for worms and parasites. Is the kitten flea free? Fleas will make a kitten anemic and that will result in a under weight kitten. Buy a can of KMR kitten milk and add that to the diet. And a vet check up would be a good idea. Canned kitten food and jarred baby food meat is good.

Is she not weaned? Keep her on kitten replacer milk if she's unweaned.

If she is able to eat solid food, go with quality brands of kitten food. Her undernourishment may be due to worms, so a vet visit should be a priority to get her checked out.

Good luck!

she should be plumping up right away if you bought a high quality kitten food and she is eating well. I had my cat tested for worms/parasites adn I had tobringin a tiny bit of poop, they look at it under a microscope so you would not be able to see it with your own eyes if she has a parasite. Bring a stool sample to the vet, its like 12 bucks and well worthit to know if she is sick or not.

Supplement with baby food - the meat varieties. Had the same problem with my kitten. The lamb was her favorite, followed by turkey and beef...she didn't care for the chicken. Unfortunately, she had a stomach bug, so oodles of antibiotics, a very evil vet bill and much love later, she's a healthy, destructive heathen of a cat...and we couldn't love her more :)
