Xanax is a benzodiazepine similar to Valium but stronger used to treat panic attacks. Its also used for insomnia and other conditions determined by your doctor.
You should not drink alcohol with Xanax
You should not mix Xanax with any downers such as sleeping pills or CNS depressants
You should not abruptly discontinue Xanax
Xanax is addictive and you can develop a chemical dependence for Xanax
Xanax works fast and you should feel better within the first day of using it
Xanax slows the action of the central nervous system which is going to slow down heart rate and respiration. It should make you feel good and relaxed.

A good Doctor has following points.. *His social or communication skills with the patients which constitutes both verbal and non-verbal (body language) communication...As our profession is a Community Service. *He should be a role model (a doctor who tells his/her patients to quit smoking should not be seen smoking outside the hospital 5 minutes after the patient leaves.. where's the intergrity in this right?) *He should be able to communicate in a way the patient understands (not going off on the properties of amino acids... etc. etc) as this may come out as arrogance *He, IDEALLY should follow up on his patients ... give them phone calls to see how they're doing *The doctor should be WILLING TO TEACH!!... this goes along very well with preventive health care. The doctor should give the patients the fishing rods, rather than the fish. If a doctor knows how to teach his/her patient what to do and what not to do, the doctor will be able to help the patient change his lifestyle for the better so that the patient doesn't have to keep coming back. *>And last but not the least he must be INTELLIGENT, UPDATED, And Most Of all ETHICAL. xanax is an anti-anxiety drug usually prescribed for patients who are experiencing severe stress and/or panic attacks. take the medication as prescribed. if you're not being monitored by a psychiatrist, my advice would be to get to see one ASAP. he/she will determine the correct dosage for you, how frequently to take it, and the possibilities for addiction should the medicine be misused. he/she will also determine when it's time to be gradually be taken off the drug. withdrawal from xanax is NEVER cold turkey because doing so could cause seizures. DON'T allow any doctor to take you off xanax cold turkey.

Jazzylipps is correct on both, Your Dr should explain to you why he/she prescribed it for you. If nothing else go back to the pharmacy and let the pharmacist tell you more about it.
