Is it because they don't believe in the right god? I once got told that I would go to hell because I don't believe in god, who decides this? Apart from not believing in god I have been a good citizen and never done anyone any serious damage. Should I not be forgiven for being a nonbeliever?

if you don't believe in God why do you believe in hell?
if God doesn't exist, then hell doesn't exist and you have nothing to worry about.
if you really want answers then pray this prayer in sincerity.
GOD IF YOU ARE REAL PLEASE MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN TO ME.

I am 110% behind you. I am a firm believer that "God" does not exist. Why should we suffer if he can stop it? No "God" is a man made myth that people created to make themselves feel they had something to live and die for. And to die for i mean that they dont want to believe when they that is it, they want to believe there is a heaven they go and spend the rest of eternity being happy. Its crap, no-one knows. As for hell, Why does hell exist if "God" forgives everyone??? Whats with religious? Who made religion? MAN did. And why? At the turn of one of the centuries I think it was the 16th (note the word i think) people thought the world was gonna end so they went around burning building etc and it didnt. And what do you know. The catholic church was found (I was born a catholic) and why to get money and land. Why could priests marry back then and not now? Because their kids where being willed land and money when they died. Blah Blah I could go on forever on how F88ked up the world is believing this crap. When no1 knows. As for karma, that is crap. No1 deserves to live in hell. Cause to me this world is hell. Take a look at some little four year old tied to a tree and bricked outta of it. Or Iran r Iraq r Usa r Israel. War is brought on by religion. So no I dont believe Jesus is alive and I dont believe in God and if there is a hell it cant be worth than earth.

God is alive. Jesus was crucified for our sins so we would be saved. He works in many ways, the suffering to people in this world is because of mans continued sin. You may have led a good life, but you do not believe, Jesus will return the day or the hour is not known. The first thing is that all Jews will return back to Israel, their homeland. We are born into sin because of Adam and Eve but when we get baptised as a child that is the first stage, we are not wholly Christian until we are old enough to make our own choice and become "born again" as Adults

Firstly what do you mean when you say 'God'
There is no agreed definition of what this word means, never has been, never will. 'God' (in my definition of the word) means to explore the unknown ,look into the unfathomable, the immense reality which we are part of

Everyone suffers to some degree, its part of the process of life. I think all those guys crucified by the Romans, whether called Jesus or not suffered quite a lot. I dont think you'll be going to 'Hell' though (what does this word 'hell' mean anyhow? just another of the overused/ ill defined terms which seem to plauge us)
What is there to believe or not believe , all we can honestly do is explore. Atheists and Religious Fundamentalists are in the same boat really, both have set in stone ideas and both react to a simplistic notion of what 'God' is. Personally speaking the agnostic viewpoint seems ( when you think about it) to be the only rational standpoint to take.
Peace

people suffer because they don't have their resources and needs met.

On the other hand Jesus Christ is a wonderful counselor and comforter. Being a good person is nice but have you ever wonder what it would be like if you were a good person with Jesus in your life.. Powerful..you can do so much more in other people lives.

Do you ever wonder where you will spend eternity? Would it be in Heaven or Hell? there are no in between.

For you to talk about forgiveness, If you need forgiveness all you have to do is ask God. According to 1John 1 verse 9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Read 1 John 5-10

Suffering is like pain; physical pain alerts us when something is wrong with our body. Suffering is an indicator of spiritual crisis; there is sin in a world which is supposed to be perfect.

And when you say you have never done any serious damage, is rejection of the Creator of the universe not serious. It's like treason, but on a massive scale.

And to say you are a good person, this won't get you to heaven. Heaven is like Mensa. Mensa is an organisation for really intelligent people, you need to get a very high IQ to get into it. The only difference is, heaven is perfect. However, so we can get there, we need Jesus.

GARETH M,
This question is asked often and I like this question. It immediately exposes the subtlty of what those in the World tends to think.

"If god is real? And Jesus is alive...... how come so many people suffer in this world?"
From a Protestant Christian's perspective:
Because this world has gone it's own way. It's not the way that He would have it. Yet He is the owner of it. The problem is that sin is in the world, but what exactly is that supposed to mean?

It means that we have a nature in us that causes us to go our own way. We were not originally designed to do that. What this nature does is it tells us that our way is the right way. The ways of others are opinions and have bearing only upon those that hold them. If it's okay for them, it's okay for them. It does not mean that it's okay for me.

Enter the Christian who says that God's ways are the ways we need to understand and do. What are we going to do with that?

Well, the ways He set forth are in the Bible. As the faithful Christian literally or figuratively points to that book as having the evidence to the claim. Anyone can read it, it's there for understanding though. How to understand it. How come an Atheist and a Christian, or other Christians even can read this and come away with something different. Even that question has been addressed within those pages.

Without trying to go into so many subjects, I will leave you with this. There are none that want to come to God that do not have the Spirit, God's Spirit leading them to Him. So the desire itself comes from God.

"Is it because they don't believe in the right god?"
No. All people suffer, Christian or not. I am on disability right now for a back injury, for instance. But even the way I handle it is different than the ones that go their own way. It becomes a faith issue for me. I know that within the Bible, it tells me that God is my Healer. And "With His stripes." that is; the wounds of Jesus as he was being whipped," I was healed." So my words to God are," I claim your promise, Lord , that I am healed in Jesus name." That's an act of faith. No one else has to know that I do that, I'm bringing it up to you so that I can use it as an illustration.
All suffer.

"I once got told that I would go to hell because I don't believe in god, who decides this?"
Believing in God is said by many. But the difference for a Christian is that Jesus is the focus. He is God, He became a man, He was the sacrifice for sins. He has been given all authority and power over all things. He decided to be the sacrifice, he decided the criteria for being one of His people, and not being one of His people.

"Apart from not believing in god I have been a good citizen and never done anyone any serious damage. Should I not be forgiven for being a nonbeliever?"
Jesus said," There is none good but God." Our way tells us what is good, and what is evil. Funny that this should be so, for the Bible claims that we got this "knowledge" from something that God said to leave alone! Irony. And now "everyone is turned to their own way."

According to the Bible, you do not get into heaven by being 'good.' You can get into heaven by trusting God through Jesus Christ. Check this verse out, I think it is right on to the subject:
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

It is so within the grasp of any who want it. It's easy to take. And once you do, hold on to it more than your own life. That's Christianity.

First, God , has a capital G. God is or He is not. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and you will be saved. It is a choice, you dont have to sweat over it. I choose to believe, being a good citizen does not qualify you to be a believer. You first have to believe that He is who He says He is. The world is in a pile of trouble because of the coices they made. It is not God's fault, He gave you a free will, and you are the proof, you exercise that free will daily, what will you choose today?

There is ONLY ONE GOD!!!!! There is but one true GOD!!
It is not Allah, Budda, or any number of other things.
Being moral, or a good citizen, or joining a church, will not get you to heaven. All of those are good things to do. But if you don't believe that Christ was born of a virgin, was crucified for our sins to reconcile us with the Father, and was raised again on the third day after his crucifiction. Then NO you won't be forgiven for you sins. Because your sins have to be washed in his precious blood from the cross to be forgiven.
He gave you the choice to believe or not to. So that way you have no one to blame but yourself on judgement day.

God is not Jesus is why and if they think this then their prayers go no where and this is one thing one must realise.
second Karma comes into play here not just this or that but your past deeds must be reaped!
this is not hard to believe nor to understand but first you need proper education and once you are well grounded in theology then you begin to not question for then you already will know a little of how things are.

Christians say god loves us all and will forgive all our sins so they are contradicting their selves when they say you'll go to hell for not believing.
at least you are a good person and probably not as hypocritical as them.
and you have a good point about all the suffering in the world, if god was so grate then only the evil people would be made to suffer, not the good ones or the Innocent animals, even the Christians suffer in this world but then, they are evil

just be yourself and believe in yourself and doing good things, respect all living things, dont lower yourself to some of their beliefs
