ready made is cheaper. To make the stock you'll have to buy a whole lot of vegtables and you may not want that much. It's best to make your own cause then you can make a few jars worth and freeze for future use. So it really depends on how much you need it and how often you'll use it.

It has to be cheaper to make your own!
Make it when you are cleaning out your fridge.
Take your vegetables that are tired.
Cut off the brown areas and use the rest for stock.

I would think it is cheaper to go to your local Mega Mart and buy it off the shelf.
You need to purchase all the vegetable ingredients, spices, and containers to put the stock in from the Mega Mart anyway!
Plus, if you make more than you need there's a chance it can go bad on you.

because of utiliy prices stock it is not as cheap to make as well as vegetable prices are up. however, you can make a whole lot more from your stove assuming you are going to use it all at the time you make it or if you are able to freeze it which would probably be cheaper.
now if it was me when the broths go on sale for like 2 for a $1.00 or 67 cents a can then i would stock up. many times you only need a can for the recipe you are making.

The real issue is MSG. I am aware of only one brand that currently makes stock (chicken, beef and vegtable stocks) without being loaded with MSG. That's Swanson, organic stock, in the box. And it just came out in my area (and sold out quickly I might add).
Although it is work to make stock, even vegetable stock which is alot easier to make than the other stocks, this issue with MSG is a big enough deal to avoid buying commercial stocks if you can't get your hands on the organic stuff (which is quite expensive I might add).

If you already have the veggies left over from another recipe, it can be cheaper to make the stock. Plus it's going to be better for you -- a LOT less salt and additives.

It is cheaper to purchase the stock, but in the long run your saving more if you freeze your veggie's for future use.

Both ways have their good points.
Buying it is cheaper and faster.
Making your own tastes better, and you control the additives, like salt and pepper, other seasonings and spices. Plus it's a great way to clean the fridge.

well stocks are much easier to buy but the cheapness is dependant on the time of year. i would but it unless you have leftovers of the stuff to make the stock.
