Clicks and "pops" can be cause by a variety of resason. The range from a gas bubble popping, to a piece of connective tissue riding over a bone spur, to a tear in a piece of cartilage. As a rule of thumb, about 99% of pops are harmless. It is causes you pain, however, seek medical evaluation.

That part of your back my be weak or sore. Try strectching and doing excercises that will help strengthen that part.
