Are the cigarette lighters in American and European (continental) cars the same?

I'm planning trip to Europe, and need to know if I'll be able to power my GPS off of the cigarette lighter in my rental car using the same adapter I use in America.

We were wondering the same thing in the Spring when my parents were taking a trip to Ireland.
The cigarette lighter ports were NOT the same.
I think my parents ended up buying a converter to use to make their stuff work.

i would think they are the same.
