I have been quoted £120 plus VAT for an oil and filter change on my car. It is coming up to one year old and according to VW all thats needed is an oil/filter change. The main dealer prices are rediculous. Will using and independent garage make my warranty void? And what about re-setting the service due computer warning data?

Put it this way. I do my own. Synthetic oil costs about $20 and a filter about $4

$24 = £12.72 so they're charging you over 100 quid for raising your car up for a few minutes, draining oil into a pan and unscrewing, & replacing a filter.

As long as you keep receipts for the oil or independant oil changes so they know you kept a regular schedule, and what type of oil you used) you will be ok. Write on the repeipts the mileage at the time.

Also be absolutely sure the correct oil is used (probably synthetic) if you go independant with a NEW car.

On average places here in the USA charge $35 for oil & filter. That's £18.54.

The computer shoud reset itself, however if it doesn't many places like the larger Halfords in the UK will do this for free.

Yikes, you went a whole year before doing an oil and filter change? On my 2003 Camry, I had the oil/filter changed by an independent oil change co. at the first 1000 miles. After that, I always have the oil/filter changed at 3000 miles.
Having a mechanic or oil change garage do it will not void your warranty, but keep meticulous records and receipts.
Look in your owners manual to get info on resetting the service light. No big deal. If you are using synthetic oil, I would change the oil/filter around 6000 miles. I change oil/filter to get the dirt and corrosives out of the engine, not because the oil company says their oil can last (not break down). It costs about $30 US here in California to get your oil/filter changed, lubed, tire pressures checked, all vital components under the hood/bonnet checked and they even vacuum the car and do the windows.
To make a long story short, learn to change the oil/filter yourself. Once you do that, you will always know that it's done and done right. Some dealers or oil changers will tell you that they changed the oil/filter, but don't do it. If you have them do it, watch the work being done. Good luck.

It depends on the terms of the warranty, and who issued it.
A factory warranty cannot, under EU law, be invalidated by having routine maintenance carried out by an independent garage.

However, if it is an insurance-backed warranty (sometimes called a dealer warranty) then that is a different matter, and you will need to check the terms of the policy. I know that with a new Renault in the UK the first year of the warranty is factory-backed, but the second and third years are insurance-backed and require the car to be serviced by an authorised dealer. I'm not sure how VW provide their warranty cover.

When MG Rover collapsed this situation left some owners in an odd situation - they had cars where the first two years of warranty (factory-backed) now had no backing, but once the car was two years old the insurance-backed warranty would kick-in, and they would be covered again for a year.

The filter will be £8 , the oil £15. Do it yourself. 15 minutes only
Search a VW Golf forum and you'll find a way to reset the service lights yourself

Good luck

I am from Australia so I dont know what your UK warranty provisions are BUT I do work for VW.
If the parts and oil used by your new repairer cause or look like they caused problems, your warranty will not apply. When your warranty runs out VW will continue to help with MAJOR repairs for a while but only if you have been a LOYAL customer. They will show goodwill if you do!!

You could also try National tyre, Kwik Fit etc, they will be cheaper and be able to dispose of the waste.

your car needs an interim service, any vat registered garage can do this and it should not affect the warranty

it cost alot of money because they are using synthetic motor oil and that is alot more expensive but its what you need, don't try and use regular oil cause you can damage your engine, i just got my oil changed on my 2001 jetta 1.8T and it was about $80USD and i was really surprised but i looked it up on line and it said it is necessary
