Do people sometimes join religion not because the truly believe in it but for some kind of ego boost? The aspect of being in some kind of special club?

There are different religions and many different sects and denominations of each one and it always seems to come down to "my religion is better than yours" or "I'm better than you because I belong to the only group that's going to heaven."

Know what I'm talking about?

A lot of people seem to make this out about Christianity but as you stated there are many religions who feel that theirs is the only way. It has nothing to do with ego if it does you have sinned right there. As in the Christian religion ego has no place in it. You are supposed to be dead to the flesh and reborn in the spirit. Truth of the matter is that no one who has not accepted Christ will get into heaven. That has nothing to do with ego just to the key you hold. If you have the wrong key you can not open the door. Jesus is the only key to the gates of heaven.

originally, I believe religion was about doing good, but recently (over the last 300 years) religion been tangled with our egos...which is always sure to fail.

Answering your question, sure some people join a religious group for the wrong reasons and they pass judgement on others...what they forget is that it was never our job to pass judgement. We are here to be love and hope. In the scope of love and hope is forgiveness and acceptance.

THe church/mosque/temple is just a shelter faith is what is within some of us can see it better than others, some fake it, and some just don't get it.

When I joined a church it was because I needed instruction and help in developing better behavior patterns and habits. There are stages a person goes through in their spiritual growth and in the beginning after the salvation experience, its all about corrected thinking through the grace of God. Later when life has been much improved they are proud of their church and religion, still later they understand perspectives outside the church are far removed from what they've learned through experience and study. In the stage of pride, Christians come off as pious and overbearing and unfortunately, this is the biggest part of the body of Christ. Attrition is the reason more mature Christians aren't the majority of the body. Either by their death or turning back into a sinful life of rebellion. Once they reach the maturity level that empowers them to act more from a basis of love for those outside the body, Christians come off as the kind of people you want to be like. This takes years to achieve so you're going to hear of and experience Christians who claim maturity because they've been warming a seat in the church for ten years or more but still insist 'YOU NEED JESUS!' I believe you need Jesus too, but I know better ways to get that across to you than repeatedly offending every offensive commenter on Answers.

Other people discover other benefits to religion and so emphasize those benefits. This belief has been around long enough for there to be many variations on core beliefs. Add to that the agendas brought into the church by people who do not want to accept all the tenets of the Christian faith and so adjust the holy books and/or their interpretations to fit their goals and you get whole groups who don't even accept the deity of Christ yet still call themselves Christian.

People who are serious about the tenets of faith, and not prejudiced to Biblical tenets are proving their understanding of Christian faith by quoting the scriptures within the context from which they were delivered. After two thousand years of this conflagration, the result is many churches who pick and choose which tenets they accept while others try to apply the whole instruction of the Bible to their lives. Among these there are various interpretations to minor points, but all agree to the basics. I can see how it would seem very confusing and appear to be a lot of wrangling over nothing from the outside until you look into what the issues are.

The Bible specifically names certain behaviors as abominable to God, yet some churches due to political pressure are placing people living in daily practice of the abominations to God as leaders and preachers in their church. This reflects on the whole identity of Christianity, so the churches attempting to place the whole of the Bible into practice in their own lives find it necessary to defend their faith to non-believers based on the actions of churches that participate in this wrong behavior.

We all have the need to feel as though we belong and are accepted. Yes some people join religions (and cults) to fulfill this desire, not everyone mind you but some do.

Religion is when you try and please God by doing good works and it also make you feel good about doing. Grace is when God does something for you as a free gift. That is what the Lord Jesus Christ did on the cross for us. He died for our sins. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Not all religions believe that they are the right one, even when it comes down to straight dogma, believe it or not.

you see all of that is based on the person's personality...some people ARE like that, that's the only reason they go to church and so on...BUT if you join a certain church it's because you should relate to that belief...but i get what you're saying tho!
