Bang on!
The armed forces already take on people with minor criminal records. Even as officers!
Those with voilent/drug/sexual convictions belong inside. But other minor offences should be sent off to the army/RN/RAF.
But what do we know? Afterall - we are only the ones that put the government in place!

It seems like a good idea, but I just think it would hurt the Army. A lot of the people who volunteer with criminal backgrounds end up being poor soldiers and are kicked out shortly after joining. If criminals are forced to join, it would only make the problem worse.
All of these new soldiers would boost the manpower of the Army....at first. But a good chunk of them, if not a majority, would start getting into trouble or just wouldn't cooperate with others. That would waste the good soldiers' time, because they would be forced to punish, supervise, and continually correct the new involuntary recruits. In the end, it would just divert manpower from doing legitimate Army tasks to taking care of the troublemakers.
What's worse is that these new recruits could be sent over to Iraq or Afghanistan. A group of soldiers need to depend on each other when serving in combat environments. Irresponsible, criminal soldiers would end up getting good soldiers killed.

The worst offender should be in the army and drop behind enemylines as sock troops.
MOst of those in jail are there for drug crimes I think that the The Grovenment need to have a been handle on drug and hte only way I see of doing this is to make all drug legal. That way they can sell the right to selling crack are other really bad drugs to one person and tell them that if it is found in use bye children or in public location they will be fine and loose the right to sell it. That way those that make there living off of drugs have to control the spead and usage of it, or they lose their income. With the durg related crimes over the prison population would be 1/4 it's current size.

So you would like our armies with a load of small time criminals in it ehhhh.
They didn't care what they did before so what really makes you think a Sargent major yelling at them for a few years will change them.
I'm not a criminal and never been in trouble with the police but if I had been I don't think that someone shouting at me for most of the day waking me up 5am for a 6 mile run would make me any less mellow, in truth I would hate the system even more, learnt how to handle myself and when finished probably turn to a higher level of crime.
As for learning a trade, no I don't think so to them or me "forced labour".
COMPLETELY NUTS

Maybe they should give the very low risk offenders the CHOICE of joining the military or serving jail time...I don't know if I would want a bunch of people with bad attitudes about it being FORCED to join. Another thing they could do is give them the choice to join and not have to pay fines, cut down on their probation time, or other things. I think low-risk offenders could often be dealt with outside of the jail system anyway--ankle bracelets, seeing probation officers, being forced to go to counseling for problems, etc.

I'm going to get a lot of hate mail for this... but, really, why the Army? So they can mis-represent our country wherever they go?
That would be lowering our standards that ain't too high as it is... if not jail, then community service for minor infractions. But to join the Army and go somewhere else and continue the same kind of criminal behavior...?
Crimes are committed by criminals and criminals DO belong segregated from the society they would victimize! If need be, build more jails and prisons... at least jails and prisons will employ people... cooks, maintenance, uniform manufacturers, food supply companies, guards, drivers, etc., and keep those that cannot live in society OUT of society.
Look, once boys AND girls graduate high school, and before they can go to college and start wasting Federal Grants so they can hang around colleges, waste time and their patents' money, and continue their misbehavior, or before they start working in menial jobs due to lack of skills and experience, they should be compelled to join one of the branches of the Armed Services for 3 years. One immediate benefit i s that they will be away from the peer pressure that ultimately gets them into troulbe.
HOLD IT... don't get your bras in a tangle or your jockeys up your creases! My nephews, those that served in the Air Force or Marines, do not regret serving and are most grateful for the experiences and have better jobs than those that did not serve... they also went to college and did better than when they were in high school... as opposed to those that did not serve (I tried to join during Viet Nam but was far too myopic to pass eye test; I petitioned that I could do something in spite of my poor vision and was not allowed... long story).
By joining the Armed Services, you will better appreciate what it is to live in this country, moreso if you serve outside of the USA.
Also, you will learn skills for a responsible life in civilian life. You will mature (and we all know that many kids need that, don't we?)
Aside from that, you will have opportunities to learn skills and gain experiences for employment or vocations.
Most importantly, you will learn discipline and respect for themselves and others; is that so wrong? You will come out with a certain degree of maturity that you will appreciate because you will then know what it is that you want out of life more than you THINK know now.
This is not meant as punishment; this is meant as an HONOR and PRIVILEGE to represent your country as in other democracies around the world.
Not so long ago a kid gave me some sass right here where I live. I just looked at him and asked, "Would you say that if my grandson was here?" and he said, "Hell no, he'll kick my butt" because he knew that he's a minor and I'm an adult. Would he have said that to me if I were his age...? I doubt he'd have time to turn around and run off before I would've handed him a knuckle sandwich! That kid didn't know and still probably doesn't know that one is responsible for what comes out of the mouth... or someone will certainly give him reason to see a dentist!
Don't misinterpret my intentions. It is to provide maturity and discipline, not to punish. I hope this doesn't offend anyone; it is not my intention.

A thought/suggestion after my own heart.
Having watched Bad Lads Army, yes, I believe some sort of armed forces training would benefit.
Work them hard and teach them self-respect, respect for others, discipline and skill. And it should not be an option that they can leave - as you say, the MUST serve their time - and then if they prove succesful they can apply for promotion.
Let's hope the politicians are listening!

.people have been advocating this for as many years as you care to mention but no-ones listening, and some of us go further to bring back 2 years conscription it would do the world of good to some of these lads, they would never regret it, if only for the comradeship, and Timone, what you have typed, I heard many times when I was in the service, and I tell you now, the army will wear you down before you have been in 4 weeks, the prison service should be the same, unfortunately it isn't

Certainly worth considering...........as a lot have said it would be a short sharp shock & certainly see how 'hard' they really are. Something different to what we have now is needed .......the govt. have had long enough to realise its not working. I like to watch the scumbags on Bad Lads Army & know that some of it is staged for TV, but it soon sorts the weaklings out no matter how hard they thought they were........mummys boys & wimps the lot of em !

Yes I totally agree sedn the rest to the Army, as that will teach them respect,a dn to do something good for our country, as in Jail they just have it way too easy, watching TV, plying Snooker/Pool, going out on trips, I mean the Government need to toughen up like they do in the U.S
