Chew gum while you're cuttin the onion.
That's what a lot of people say.
Try it!

The trick to cutting an onion without crying is not to open your mouth. That's what triggers the tears. Most suggestions focus on something to keep you from opening your mouth while cutting onions - like holding a piece of bread or a matchbook between your teeth.
I cut the onion in half, rinse under cold water, and absolutely do not talk or open my mouth while chopping, and I never have a problem.

Use a sharp knife. (A dull knife will crush the onion releasing more of the deadly spray into the atmosphere)
Hold a wooden matchstick between your teeth -- match head out. (The theory is that the match head attracts and absorbs all the bad chemicals)
Chew something. (a gum for example)
Don't chop the onion root -- or do it last. (the root end of the onion has a higher concentration of these nasty chemicals)
Wear swim goggles or a diving mask.
Put white vinegar on the chopping block to neutralize chemicals.
Burn a candle near the work area. (the candle flame pulls air from around it and sends it up the smoke plume but a single candle usually cannot handle the large amount of aerosol generated by a lot of dicing or fine slicing)

Cutting the onion releases specific gases that cause the tear ducts in the eyes to release as a defense mechanism.
The most effective technique that works for me is to cut the onion under running water.
The other technique is to enjoy a good cry and flush those eyes out. It might be a good thing.

I always cut the onion and then wash my hands immediately.
Nowadays I've "evolved": I now use a manual cutting machine, nothing fancy but it saves me some tears.
I can even sniff the onion that no tears come to my eyes!!
I thought the smell provoked the tears but I believe is the juice in the skin and the smell combined.

I once saw a cooking show about 20 years ago that said to whistle while you chop. Supposedly it cuts down the amount of breathing thru your nose which is the main cause of crying from onions. I have found this to work, however it won't stop all the tears.

cut it along the grain/ridges. Cutting against the ridges will make the onion juice run therefore makin u cry, also cutting it really fast helps. Just get it done and over with quickly

I hear soaking the onion in water is good, but a chef friend of mine told me that the only way to prevent the sting is to use a super sharp knife so that when you cut into it you aren't sawing the "skin" which causes the burn.
