I live in the SW of France, so I can tell you a bit.
There are about 70,000,000 people living in France. It's divided into departments rather than states or counties or provinces, each one with their own identity.
If you live here you will notice how beautiful it is. In my opinion it rivals only Italy for stunning scenery. Wherever you go you will always be near castles, narrow streets with ancient houses and good bars and restaurants.
The big accent in France is on food and drink. You would never realise how strong a part this plays in the culture until you live here. It's obsessive. Many people shop every day for food and go out of their way to find The Best of whatever it is - wine, sausisson, cheese, bread... The shops mainly close from 12-2.00pm everyday so people can stop whatever they are doing to eat lunch for two hours. This even happens in some schools.
The French culture is mainly conservative and traditional and it is surprising to see a lack of people around when you drive through towns and villages. Apart from a strong food culture, there is also a strong family culture and an accent on studying. French people tend to be very proud of their country, even nationalistic and mainly holiday within France. The French way can be terribly hard for outsiders to understand and thus French people are often found highly irritating by others because they are so different.
