Quinnie is in Tonic Water but what is it, is it a mineral of some-sort?

Indian Tonic Water was developed as a form of medication for British forces operating abroad around the British Empire. It was in countries such as India where malaria was rife and the 'Tonic' water had quinine in it which was regarded as a defence against malaria to help this medicine go down the troops started adding gin to it which saw the birth of gin and tonic. I believe club soda is just carbonated water

Club Soda is carbonated water.
Tonic water is carbonated water with quinine in it.
Quinine is a bitter drug from the bark of a cinchona tree.

Club soda can easily be consumed by itself and is rather good, to me at least. I love to also add it to cranberry or orange juice. Love the fizz.
Tonic water is extremely bitter by itself because of the quinine and it is made to be mixed with something else. It taste horrible all by its lonesome.
