Well, these days at Target or Wal-Mart, you can get a good system for $500 or less (with subscription and rebates) that should fill your bill. If you want VERY cheap, try Overstock:

Look for the ones that are less than 1 GHz processor speed.

I just recently got a Compaq laptop. It works just like any other laptop. Same features, different price. They are at Wal-mart for a little over $700. Its a wide screen one and it performs all the basic functions, has wireless internet (which means you can use it almost ANYWHERE for free, and lots of other features. Here's a link to the website http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=5007578.

I haven't checked the price on this thing in many months, but honestly I don't think 'economical' is a good word when dealing with laptops.
This is just me, you can do whatever you want, and you'll probably do just fine, but if it were me, an HP zf1000 would be one to look into.
Please, do not take my answer as the only 1, this i just how i see it.
