Does your hospital have an emergency room? Did you know that us SUCKERS that put money in the collection plate helped keep it operating so you could go there if you need it?
Does your community have a mental health center? Did you know that one in five of your friends and neighbors will need mental health services at some point. This includes smart people like you who are not SUCKERS like those of us who support programs like that, in part by putting our money into the collection plate.
Does your community include a crisis ministry to help people who have not been able to find work, or whose spouse went through a damaging change last week with no advance notice? We also keep those services going by being SUCKERS.
Agreed there are "churches" that are not responsible or honest in using the money that their members contribute. There are bible-slapping preachers that are "called" to minister elsewhere after a few years and no one ever knows they are now relaxing on the beach in the Keys somwhere.
These crimes do happen. But mature, honest religions give the money that comes in through plate offerings and pledges to honest good works. And ultimately it is the person that does not know about this that SUCKS.

While I will agree that there are some charismatically based churches where the money is certainly going to enrich the minister and his/her "ministry", Unitarian Universalist congregations are administered by a board of trustees of the local congregation and every dollar goes back to the congregation or community efforts supported by the congregation. If you believe as I do that religious communities exist to aid their members and the larger community to become better people and better places to live, then I don't see how contributing to that effort on a Sunday morning, or anytime, can be considered the act of a sucker. I have always believed the we form communities for the mutual support of one another. Any assistance I can afford to give to that ideal is a good investment in my mind.

maybe you shouldn't worry about the collection plate and just do some preying. There will be a day when you realize that YOU are the sucker
