You can't just ask that wuestion (especially about a child) without giving more details. Was he misbehaving? Trying to get attention? Afraid of the bathroom?
Alot of variables come into play in this regard and if you dont handle it CAREFULLY, you can expect this to happen again. If there was nothing else going on, it may just be that he didn't feel like going all the way to the bathroom. Kids can be lazy sometimes.
You know your child better than anyone here. But if you punish him for it (and he is already feeling bad about it) you are doing much more harm than good.

My son had issues in this area until he was 15 in fact still does. He has what is called impaction where he really can not feel when it is coming. Also some kids get really involved when they get into doing somthing and the rest of the world could disappear. Playing computer games, watching his fav show those sorts of things might make it so that he did not feel it coming. Ask him what is up he may be embarrassed to tell you he was just distracted or that he did not feel it.
Though technically possible there is a mechanical issue I am bettiing on distraction as the cause

kids can have a lot of reasons to do so. he could feel sick (that would usually be noticed because that usually makes the 'dump' smell like vomit a little. Also some kids are playing and notice they need to go too late. He could have had an 'oopsie' and felt too embarrassed to tell you. I have seen both situations in 5 year old kids. Hopefully he didnt do it on purpose. You could try and ask him about it. Try not to make him feel like he has done a bad thing, or make him feel guilty. accidents happen.

When my little girl was 5 (and that was just last year) she also would use her panties and I could not understand why.
Well I started really watching her closely and came to the conclusion that it was because she was to busy and concentrating on whatever she was doing at the time.
Like if she was outside playing........to busy playing
Watching tv........to engrossed in the cartoon
Children tend to zone out and only concentrate on what they are doing at that particular time.
I had a long discussion with her about it and explained why this should not be happening.
For awhile I would stop and ask her "do you need to potty" and she would either go or not.
But just be patient with your child and he will learn to stop what he is doing and go.
Do not get angry over it. That will only make it worse.
Children tend to want attention and if you give negative attention then that is what he will do in order to get attention, he will act out. Give positive attention and just talk to him about it.

Sounds like an attention thing. This is common in kids this age because of the stress of starting kindergarden. If your kid is starting school here maybe that is the case. Other than that attention thing. Beyond that I don't know.

Five year olds have accidents. I would not worry about it. I would only be concerned if it was not a "normal" crap. Perhaps your child is ill and needs to see a doctor.
If he is not ill and it continues to happen, I would questions why your son needs to crap his pants to gain your attention. Perhaps you should spend more time with him and less time on the computer.

He's a kid. It happens. Maybe he was too busy having fun and didn't want to deal with going to the bathroom.

Quit being so contemptible. He's a child. Children have accidents. All children have accidents. I'll bet you even had your share. Now put yourself in his place. Not only did you just totally embarrass yourself but now you've got an obnoxious asinine father degrading and belittling you for it. Have some love and understanding for crying out loud.
