Our bodies need a variety of nutrients in order to function properly. in order to get these nutrients we are required to eat a balanced meal. A well balanced diet should include;

proteins: which are responsible for growth and repair of tissues

carbohydrates: to give you energy

vitamins and minerals: Vitamins are nutrients required for essential metabolic reactions in the body. Minerals are naturally occurring substances which the body requires in small amounts to maintain proper bodily functions.

Different foods are rich in different nutrients e.g animal products are rich in proteins. Breads, pastas, potatoes, bran and cereals are all high in carbohydrates while vegetables are rich in vitamins

So it is necessary to eat a variety of foods to stay healthy. Or you could just a diet pill that contains all these stuff...
(just kidding, keep it natural!)

Because no one food will give you all the nutrients, minerals, vitamins, etc which are needed in order to keep you healthy and alive. Variety also helps keep food interesting. If you had only one thing to eat all the time it would get pretty boring.
