Awkwardness is understandable. Try to get to know the ex. If it is a gathering in celebration of their son, then the mother has that right to participate because she's the parent as well. Just try to keep it short and friendly. Better it is to see them in a public setting than in a private setting.

If my husbands ex showed up at any family function i would be upset,but I would wait till he and I were alone to let him know how I felt. His ex and the family might still get along and I cant dictate who they have at thier house

I do not have children, but I always tell women that when they CHOOSE to marry a man With Children--they must realize and accept that they will ALWAYS be connected to the Mother of thir husband's children. She has the right to say hello to her childs grandparents, aunts, and uncles from time to time--Those Are Her Son's Relatives..
