I live in SE Michigan where there is the largest concentration of Muslims outside the Middle East. There are many stores, gas stations and restaurants in the Metro-Detroit area where people barely speak English, if at all. Given the experience of the Fox news reporters who were forced at gunpoint to convert to Islam, perhaps it would be best for Americans to learn Arabic before it is too late.
Just because all of the founding documents of this nation are in English, the schools are taught in English and most TV programs are in English does not mean that everyone in America, legally or otherwise speaks English. English has never even been declared the official language.
People in European, Asian and other countries learn English, but since it is a difficult language, perhaps it is too much to expect of a person living in the United States that he learn English. It might take time and effort that could be better spent doing something else.
Chinese people who have a totally different system of writing often learn English and have better vocabulary and grammar than native Americans, but that is because they study. Indians learn English in India before they ever come to this country so that gives them an advantage.
I almost forgot that the people born in this country and educated in this country may not even care about the grammar or extensive vocabulary that English has to offer. Vulgar language is quite versitile using one word f*** for every situation.
Even educated people often do not worry about misspelled words. Perhaps we may all learn to communicate telepathically.
If God wanted us to communicate, He would not have confused the common language at the tower of Bable. So long as a store keeper can scan packages and show the sum on a screen, then make change, he is happy. His customers really do not care about his conversation. What interesting tidbits of information might he know? What banal pleasantries might he say? What curses might he spew?
Whatever takes effort does not interest most people whether it is learning English, history, math or chemistry.

No, everyone in America does not speak english. Yes, I've met a lot of Americans with poor language skills. This isn't limited to America. The outsourced call centers have script monkeys that don't know anything outside the scripts before them, and it's a struggle to understand the words that do come out of their mouths.

I don't understanding why some people are so over-reacted on your question, this is a good question for us to consider and go deeper for the solution. In Canada ,official languages are English and French though lots of immigrate they don't speak English nor French,I think as a citizen of a country, one should learn to speak their official languages.Yes ,it's benefit for people know more languages and I think the government should encourage and support them but your official language is a MUST for every citizen to respect, speak and follow.
PS .A new immigrate come to a new country for their good future, should follow the rules and laws and even their traditional but not come in to adjust the original culture to fit their own style.

The majority of people in the US speak English. I have met those that speak only Spanish but I also speak Spanish so I help them if they need it.
The mother of my son's best friend only speaks Chinese. That can be a problem sometimes but the friend translates if I need to talk to her.
There are probably more immigrants that speak only their native language than you might think. Usually their children have picked up English in school and are able to help. We have friends who speak Croatian. We hang out a little and if there is something that they do not understand the kids help out.

Everybody in America should speak English for their own benefit. There are however, pockets of immigrant communities where English is a second language and so many do not learn to speak it. Not many, and not very big pockets. Places like China town in San Francisco, and Jewish town in New York.

"American" isnt a language.
I love a variety of culture and languages, but I think an official language is necessary for continuity purposes.
Technically, one is supposed to learn basic English and American history before becoming a citizen. If they don't speak it...its either because they are not comfortable with it yet, or don't want to.
