If you hadn't said Tom was a boy, I'd have suspected that Tom were pregnant.
If you are sure he's a he, then he's probably just exercising all his options - cats are curious creatures you know.

My reaction is the same as the first -- it sounds like something a pregnant cat would do -- have you checked the Tom is really a boy? LOL
Cats tend to like small enclosed places - if you're worried about him getting stuck somewhere, make a little nook just for him. They have expensive things you can buy, or you could take a cardboard box that's big enough for him to stretch out in and turn it on its side so the flap hangs down. If it's big enough, you might even swing the one side flap closed too. Then put a small blanket or old towel in there for him to relax on.
In the winter, our cats also like where we have a blanket under an end-table that is by the heating duct so it's very cozy. A couple of my cats even like to climb under the covers.
And a word of warning --ALWAYS KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED ON FRONT-LOADING DRYERS AND WASHERS. A long time ago, a friends cat climbed in the dryer unseen... and did not come out alive.

Cats like cozy spots where they are left alone. If you live in an area that is noisy, that is most likely why he is choosing spots that are secluded. If it is no noisy, just know this...cats go through phases. Mine changes spots every 3-4 months. Right now he finds the upstairs to be a hit because it is so warm up there. A couple of months ago the chair in the living room was kitty parking only. LOL Cats just need to change up from time to time.

It does sound like pregnant cat behavior, but if you are sure He's a He.....
It's probably quite normal behavior unless you've also noticed some other odd behavior, such as not using his box, or extreme skittishness. In that case, he may be "hiding" in the closet for safety. Because in the wild, a sick animal is vulnerable, cats seldom act sick, even when they are. They would find a safe place to sleep.
So give these things some thought. If he seems otherwise normal, fine. If not, you should consult your vet.

I find this one interresting.
I used to have a cat farm, I had over 60 cats. One thing that i noticed is that if you have a cat, male or female, that is sick, they like to hide in dark enclosed, cool spaces, and don't want to be bothered by anyone. If you find that he's losing weight, or doing anything along the lines of throwing up, or has the runs, normal or pink/red in color get him to a vet. If he continues doing this and you can't see any of the above, might i suggest going to the pat store and getting this plug-it-in spray formula made to calm cats and make them feel more at home. This combats spraying and household problems. Cats are disturbed by change in routine, new objects, new places, people or other things like fighting, a new baby in the house or new pets even. This could cause him to not want to be around as often, and just hide on his own.
If you want to talk about it with someone who has been through this before email me and we can talk.

Sounds like what a male cat does after he's had his way with a female cat. He may be looking for a place for a female cats kittens. If this is so you have nothing to worry about. Your cat will get back to it's usual self sooner or later!
Have you let your cat outside and free to come and go? Do you have your cat for a mouser
cat mouse catcher or for a companion to greet you when you get home?

Some cats like to sleep in a secure place. I have three cats I got when they were feral kittens (one is licking my leg right now, lol!) Two are fine with sleeping just about anywhere they want to, but one usually likes to sleep in our closet. It's just part of who they are, and as long as there's no negative behavior attached to it (spraying, improper elimination outside of the litter box, etc) then I wouldn't worry about it.

My cats never stop acting strange. They change up their behavior all the time. I think they just get bored with some things and start new ones.

is anything different in the last 3 months? have you been working more or maybe have another pet? oftentimes animals reacts to things that are different in their environment and so stressing them out a little/ do a little detective work and i bet youll figure something out.......sometimes just spending more time with your pet can make a difference.........if this continues you can always ask a vet//// goodluck

That is normal.. My own cat finds NEW places (hard to find him at times)that he likes to curl up and sleep in. EVEN if you leave a drawer open by mistake, he will somehow climb in there and sleep as long as it is secluded and dark.
