I think more attention needs to be paid to having open communication between kids and their parents. Not just in the teen years but talking frankly and openly about sex with kids at every age. Most people in this a s s backwards country think that if you preach abstinence that eventually kids won't have sex and then we won't have teen pregnancy. The issue has more to do with educating kids and not making sex such a bad thing.

I would recommend that sexually active females get Mirena (or an IUD.) This object is put inside a females uterus during a routine office visit with an OB-gyn or doctor. Very minor/quick procedure. This will prevent pregnancy and is not found to cause overall weight gain. Also, this will last up to 5 years before needing to be replaced or can be taken out at any time and does not affect ones fertility abilities. Teens need to be educated about sex. Both in school and by their parents or legal guardian's. Also, they need to use condoms to prevent AIDS or sexually transmitted diseases, every time.

You could include a section on emergency contraception. Just recently it was approved by the FDA for over the counter status. However, there is a minimum age requirement - I believe 17 years old. How can a nation like the U.S. hope to prevent pregnancy if young girls don't have access to emergency contraception?
Also, check out Planned Parenthood for information about birth control, including statistics.

Well I'll tell you right now there is only 1 way not to get pregnant; by not having sex. I was a teen mom and I was on birth control. I had no problem with getting the patch, used it consitently for 4 months, and then found out I was pregnant. With my second child, I was on the Nuva ring. I got pregnant with her after being on birth control for 3 weeks. Good luck with your report.

Yes there are several options for teens to protect them from pregnancy, but most of them are too imbarrassed to ask for it or buy it. Parents need to make sure that they are making conversations open so their children can discuss these type of things with them. As a parent you don't want to think of your children doing these types of things, but you can't stop them. It will happen if they want it to, and to make a open relationship you can at least give them options for preventatives.
