I heard from a pet shop owner that blood tests are done on pet birds to determine their gender.

There is not much of a way to tell just by looking. I have a sun conure and I am sure he is a male. He flirts with my girlfriend and plays rough with me. He has a squired forehead and just simply acts like a male. You get feelings as you get to know your bird. You can check like a water well wisher by using a needle on about two foot of thread and hold it over him. If it swings long it is a male and if it goes in cirles it is female. Not everyone has the touch to do it but a lot of people do. If the needle just hangs strait down you don't have the touch. Test it on members of your family and you will see it works.
Or you can get a DNA test.

You can have the bird sexed through it's feathers. I did this with my Jenday Conure. Go to www.avianbiotech.com for the kit.
