U can not carry any liquids on your carry on(hand luggage). NOthing what so ever, no key chains, tweezers, cosmetic things which look like weapons/sharp objects. One hand luggage per person of 13lbs. And 2 luggages per person, of 50lbs each(it is I think 32kgs). But it is always better to check with your airline for more information.
The dimensions must not exceed: a maximum length of 45 cm, width of 35 cm and depth of 16 cm (17.7"x13.7"x6.2" approx) including wheels, handles, side pockets etc (this is roughly the size of a standard laptop bag or briefcase). This is similar to a lap top bag, not the usual carry on.

Well.. you may carry as a hand luggage anything what is not considered as "dangerous goods": explosives, gun, knife, firework, acid, etc. As well there are limitations for a baggage which is kept in the cargo compartment. Check with airline before you travel.

you have to check all real and fake weapons and specifically get them examined at the luggage counter

if the blade is shorter than 4 cm you can bring it in your carry-on (I believe). No liquids or gels in your carry-on. Put those in your checked suitcase

cell phones and iPods are good on all planes and luggage unless you're in Britain.

go to www.tsa.gov they will have updated lists of what is allowed on board. I'm pretty sure they allow spelling books on airplanes though, and I would recommend you do that and learn how to spell.
