A small booster rocket in the spacecraft. As there was far less gravity on the moon. It needed less thrust, and fuel.

The lander, known as the Eagle, was made of two separate parts. When they took off, they left the lower part, with the legs and support structure on it, behind. Other than that it was done normally, they just used a rocket and some fuel and liquid oxygen. Remember, it's six times easier taking off from the Moon than from the Earth.
