That is the biggest hoax. People are always trying to achieve this gift of "Enlightenment" with a supposedly direct connection with the spiritual world. Religious fanatics come and go and it can sometimes be very comical.

You must first be a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The gift of tongues is a spiritual gift from God, but it because God is spirit, we must pray in the Spirit (tongues)
Jesus said everyone has to be baptised in water and also in the Spirit and the gift of tongues is the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Pray and seek God. You must first confess your sins and ask Jesus to cleanse you with His blood, because sin can hinder us fro seeing God's face.
Pray for the gift of tongues, and if you feel like opening your mouth and speaking, just open and say it. Even if you dont know what you are saying. Have faith and trust in God.
Now why I say this, because as you receive God's blessing and gift, satan will put doubts in your mind "is this really from God" "am I muttering these myself"
Don't listen to them. Cast them out in Jesus' name and continue to pray in your new found tongues.
It might just be a syllable ie, ba ba ba ba ba
or it could be a "phrase", ie, ba la ba shi la ba la ba shi la..
in any case, just repeat it. just like how we learn to speak in any language, we learn.
when we were babies, we learnt how to say papa and mama, etc.. and then our vocabulary expanded.
Same here. you start with a syllable or "word" or "phrase" and just continue repeating it and praying everday to God in the Spirit and slowly you will see changes.
But never quit and never let satan put doubts in your mind.
One way to start receiving tongues is, after praying, just start saying praises to God such as "hallelujah, hallelujah.." repetitively and faster and faster and then you will receive the Spirit.
Otherwise, get a pastor to pray for you to receive the gift..and you will be amazed at how different your life will be once you receive it.

They exist but God gives this gift alone. You don't just practice and acquire this ability. Though I must say that many who claim to speak in tongues are not really doing so.
