I enjoyed it at the time but now I'm not so sure I made the right decision to become a Christian. Why is speaking in tongues so important anyway?

I'm not aware that the Alpha course "requires" glossolalia (speaking in tongues). And of course one can be a Christian for all eternity, without it! Where I live it was offered by the Anglican church and they certainly aren't into speaking in tongues...chill out, you don't "have to". Christianity is all about your relationship to Christ and other people, yeah? Work on the parts you understand, they're straightforward enough to be going on with.

I've assissted at several Alpha courses and seen many people give their lives to Jesus. It's right to keep questioning, I spent ages questioning everything after I became a Christian. The Alpha course is a good introduction to what Christians believe, and then it's time to move on and find out what it means to live as a Christian. At any time, the enemy could convince you you have made the wrong decision, and you would move away from god. Check out the parable of the seed sower. I was determined to be the seed that grows and doesn't die.
As for speaking in tongues, dont get hung up on it. I'm sure there are many Christians who never get the gift. By all means keep praying for gifts, and allow others to pray for you, but the most important part of your Christian life is to get to know Jesus through prayer and reading the Bible. If you have not been baptised in the Holy Spirit yet then pray for that, it will happen. It sounds like you need a real experience of God that will empower you, and that is promised to all who give their lives to Jesus. Ask the mature Christians in your church to help you.

Hiya im a Christian well trying to be, by you going to the Alpha Course was probably one of the best decisions you made. I attended the Alpha and it was great, i learnt so much more, and the food was great!! plus speaking in tongues will come naturally, dont let anyone force you to speak in tongues. It's a gift from God. Trust me the Christian pathway is one where you'll never look back ( i mean that positvely.) I'm sad to hear that your not sure, tell me how you get on.

Good Luck x

Alpha is not really necessary to get saved. The course I attended most of the Helpers were not fully established in the word of God. Also lots of people in churches today are religious and not born again. If someone got excited about the Gospel ( The Good News ) they were considered weird, radical or emotional.
Actually I was in a church and a Minister stood up and testified that he had been preaching for 25 years and realised he was not born again. Amazing hey!!

I encourage you to stay christian; but tounges is not neccesary to be saved or have a relationship with God, but if you actually want to get to the point in your walk with God that you can see miracles and blessing happening, then yes tounges is neccasary. Tounges is just the first of the gifts of the spirit

the gifts of the spirit are (not neccesarily in this order)

wisdom
knowledge
faith
healing
miraculous powers
prophecy
discernment of spirits
speaking in various tongues
interpretation of tongues

Again, if you ever hope to obtain any of the other gifts of the spirit, then yes! Tounges is neccesary. But to be a christian and to be saved, no it is not.

speaking in tongues is one thing but just jabbering nonsense is probably not helpful to anyone

as for alpha use your own judgement does it stand the test of time once the novelty of whatever conversion experience you have had has worn off?
