I almost do the same thing when I see very bright colors, especially red. I don't stare for 30 minutes or drool, but if it's in a store, I usually buy it. I think it is fascination or attraction. Shiny objects are really pretty. Do you like shiny rocks? Wherever I go, if I see a pretty rock, I pick it up and keep it. My favorites are the sparkly ones.

Probably for the same reason many shiny objects are worth a fortune-they're attractive. Sounds like you're obsessive though. When you catch youself staring this way, break the trance and walk away. Like with breaking any habit, it'll be difficult at first, but it gets easier with practice.

How the hell do you get anything done? Wear a blindfold in public and when driving so as not to be distracted by all the shiny stuff and maybe your time can once again be your own.
