I've looked in the owner's manual but do not see an explanation of what they stand for, only what it does (change the acceleration profile).

It stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. It overrides your automatic transmission's desire to switch gears in situations like going up Pike's Peak so you'll have more power to pass for example. Anyway that's what they told me when we bought our 99 Avalon.

Electronic controled transmission. the switch just raises the shift point and holds the transmission gear longer for power when you are asking for more throttle.
