I like Zales as well.
We purchased both of our rings from Zales.

While these may be isolated incidents, I can tell you that Robin's Brothers totally shafted my friend on her $7K engagement ring (the entire top holding the diamond sheered off and they would do NOTHING to correct the problem!), and my ring from Zales was of exceptionally poor quality (they cracked the shank - back - of the ring when they were sizing it).
Shop around - and maybe your best bet might be to look at smaller jewelers (ones that have been around a while, but are not associated with larger retailers).

Rogers, Kays, and Ostermans are all owned by the same company - very trustworthy
Zales is good as well but a little higher priced
For 5K you should be able to get something really nice. 3-stone rings are big now, as are princess cut stones

We got mine at Friedman's. I would shop around. Know what you want, how much you're willing to pay, and pick something timeless and not trendy.
Plus, it doesn't have to be a diamond. I have a friend who has a beautiful blue tanzanite engagement ring set in platinum. It is unique and lovely.

Find an independent jeweler in your area, with a good reputation -ask around! Don't get suckered into the mall stores, or the national chains. If there is one in your area, I highly recommend going to an AGS certified jeweler - they have a strict code of ethics they must follow, to retain their membership.

I could help u get your moneys worth...check out local pawn shops for diamonds you want it certified and compare prices to jewlery stores the pawn shop should be considerably cheaper, then find a jeweler find a nice setting and have the diamond added.

My ring came from Zales and it is amazing. It appraises for much more than my husband gave for it. If you want to create your own, try bluenile.com or even ice.com.
