I've only had my male since 8/10/06, and he turns 6 months old on 9/9/06. I believe he and my female mated this morning 8/27/06. Is he too young, to produce fertile sperm?

He may not be too young; however, if your dogs are AKC registered and your male isn't yet 7 months old at time of breeding then they litter will be unregisterable.

I had one male that mated with a female at 5 months but there were no pups. I had another one that fathered(mated) 2 litters before he turned 6 months. Unless you are wanting pups, You should seperate them now and hope the mating did not take. The female should be at least 18 mo before you breed her.

You didn't say whether or not your puppies are AKC registered. However, if your female does become pregnant by this unsupervised mating you will not be able to register the litter. Sires must be 7 months old. Typically males that young do not have fertile sperm, however you should take your female to your vet to see if she's conceived.

No he's not too young, but neither he nor your female should be used for breeding under the age of 2 years and then not until they have been evaluated for breed standard and been health tested (not just vet exams).

I guess you'll find out!
But I think generally you're supposed to wait at least a year before you start breeding dogs.
Good luck! Cavaliers are the best! :)
