I have a boston terrier and I love him.
He is really good with kids, I have a 6 yr old.
He is a small breed of dog, and he has short hair.
He has a really good personality and he is very lovable.
I have had several boston terrier's and all of them have been great dogs and great with kids. With very little shedding.

I would DEFINATLY NOT pick a chihuahua for small children, then can be mean, and are companion dogs, which means they mainly love only one person, plus little kids think its a toy, so the dog can end op getting hurt, or being very mean toward the children. I would pick a miniture schnauzer, a beagle, but what I think is the best out of all is a pug, they love children, and are cute and lovable, plus they have much more muscle than a chihuahua, so they can't get as hurt as easily. If you are interested in any small dog, talk to the pet shelter where you would get t from, and make sure they are good with children. Hope this helps you!

Go to your local SPCA and look for a small short-haired dog that is somewhat young ( a few months to a year old ) so you can teach him to not snap at your kids and he will be brought up to be good with them, some breeds just don't like to tolerate younger children especially if they were never broken of an aggressive behavior while young. If even a mutt or cross breed dog seems a little mellow rather than hyperactive when you first meet him they may be your best bet to go with.

Just 5 of the things you should be considering.
1. Bitches rather than dogs tend to be less aggressive
2. Some breeds like poodles for example don't shed hair.
3. Some breeds are known to have softer temperaments eg labradors..poodles have soft natures also
4. Breeds which have been bred down to a small size, tend to suffer more health problems.
5. Larger dogs need more excercise.(so if you want a small dog this wont be so much of a problem)

There are so many breeds of dog, not to mention all the different crossbreeds there are now (labradoodles and so on). I would recommend going to your local animal shelter and looking at the dogs there. They often get you to fill out a form and they match the dog to your criteria. If you want to go the pedigree route then I would go to a dog show (yes it may sound a bit strange but you will see typical examples of the different breeds and you can talk to their owners to see what they're really like). Once you've spoken to different owners and chosen a breed you like then contact the kennel club for a list of breeders in your area. PLEASE do not buy from a puppy farm or a backyard breeder- be especially wary of people advertising several breeds at once. Often the pups are sickly, infested with parasites (not good for near children) and sometimes die.
Hope this has helped- good luck in your search.

Statistically Labradors and Golden retrievers are the least likely dogs to bite in the world, good going given the number of them owned as pets. Both big dogs, labrador more medium sized, as far as the hair goes people are now breeding "labradoodles" a cross between a labrador and a poodle, these dogs do not cast hair!!! but can be quite expensive.

Maybe a border terrier or mini poodle....A mutt from the shelter would be your best bet though..mixed-breed dogs are usually really good with kids and very hardy..I wouldn't recommend a beagle unless you don't mind piles of short hair all over, just like labs...these dogs actually seem to shed more than long-haired dogs-if that's possible:)

get a rottweiler they are the most intelligent dog!
i know its not a small breed but if you get a girl it wont grow as big as a male.i have a rottie and a german shepard and they are excellant dogs around children i have 3 children aged 13, 6 and 3 and my rot is brilliant with them, its bad owners that make a dog bad! rotties have a very large brain and can pick up obediance v quickly and they not too hairy i love them!! but make sure if you choose this breed you read up about them loads and look at loads and get from proper breeder. small dogs are snappy (little dog syndrome) hope this helps. its a myth that ALL large breeds need lots of exercise you could mess up their hips if you walk them too far and too long.

I am vice president of a small animal rescue. If you are looking for a dog i would check your local rescues and animal shelters before paying $500 in a pet store for one. Dogs that are in pet stores usually come from puppy mills. The dogs that we get in do have some problems, but we make sure that they are taken care of before we adopt them out. It's like dogs that are saved from kill shelters know that you saved them. They are A LOT sweeter.....well i think they are. A good website to go to is www.petfinder.com Look up rescues that are around you. It also gives pictures and descriptions of the dogs that they have at their rescue. Hope that this helps you!

There are web sites where you can enter your family info, like kids, how often you are home during the day, favorite past times that sort of thing and it will tell you which dogs are good for your family. I believe when I found it I started out at Eukenuba dog tournament site on Animal planet site. Good luck.

I'd say a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are calm and kind with children. Look up to see if you can re-home a rescued one first though, less work than a new puppy and will already have been evaluated with children etc. Have fun!
