YES!! I tried it. For about two weeks my hair looked like cherry kool aid. Is what I did was wash it in Panteen ProV Daily clarifying shampoo, which toned down the red but dried my hair and made the color last for a shorter period of time. I would go to a Sally Beauty supply and ask for some expert advice. The are also really cheep and you have a bigger variety of colors.
P.S. my hair was bleached before I tried to color it red.

Depends on what you start with.
Hair dye works on pigment and start color. If you take blond hair that has a natural red tone to it... it will pick up that red tone and run with it and the blond will almost turn brassy.
I always dye my hair depending upon what TONE the color has and what color Im starting with.
ANd if your roots are much lighter or darker than the rest of the hair (like an inch or more) dye it all one solid darker color first, wait a few weeks and then highlight (or lowlight) with reddish tones until you get what you want.
I suggest a salon for reds and blonds always. It is hard to screw up darker tones but lighter one's are awful and you don't want to end up looking like Little Orphan annie.
Burgundy is a nice tone. the heavier darker reds are nice... watch your tone words. Red is a generalization that is cast across the entire spectrum and it really means nothing in the end result. Watch out for words like copper, flame, fire, cherry, strawberry and penny... these are brassy!
If you mess it up... there is always a product called "Red-out" that will strip out the redness and the brassy tones and mellow it out in preperation for a darker all over even tone.

I used the Feria red shades and although, the shades are beautiful and most importantly, represents what you see on the box, the hair color is very damaging. Try Garnier Nutrisse. There is a great selection of red shades and the product is very gentle.

If you're starting with blond, there is a chance it might turn out a bit clownish, or even pink. If your hair has been colored or bleached, you can never tell, especially with reds.
If you have the money, have it colored in a salon, it is worth it.

Yep, for about a week. Then, even with colour-friendly shampoo, it will turn brassy and then rapidly dull. I wasn't impressed one bit.
