Quechua is not anywhere near dead as the previous answerer implied. It is one of the two official languages of Peru.

Quechua is not related to any other language. It is, in many ways, a typical Native American language with many of the same features that make Native American languages interesting. Quechua is, like English, a language (or languages) with a great deal of internal diversity, spoken from Colombia in the north to Chile and Argentina in the south. Most of the linguistic works on Quechua focus on one of the many dialects. Until very recently there was no such thing as "Standard Quechua". Apparently, from the tone of the article, there is a "Common Quechua" evolving to meet the needs of the millions of Quechua speakers in Peru (at least). Go on Amazon.com and do a search for "Quechua language" and see what kinds of books pop up. I work on North American native languages, so I'm not up to speed on what is happening in South America, but the fact that Windows has a Quechua version is truly exciting. The next one will be Guarani, one of the official languages of Paraguay, possibly followed by Greenlandic Inuktitut (Eskimo), one of the official languages of Greenland. Since no other native language holds official status in any other country of the Americas, it may be a while before we see other versions (if ever).
