It is most likely a bird as bats are virtually silent. Every now and then you may be able to hear "clicks" these are the ultrasonics emitted by bats but if your hearing a woorble or something that is realitively loud and consistant it is most likely a bird... by the way you can't hear most birds at night after about 9:30 or so most birds sleep at night except for owls and some hawks. so if your hearing the sound after say 10 o'clock it is most likely an owl. though you won't hear owls in flight. they only speak (make sounds) when roosting
Hope that helps. Good luck
Oh and on a personal basis there was a starling that used to fly around my house all the time and thats what was making the noise for me.

Bats do not make any sounds that human can hear so it is safe to say that a bird makes the sound you hear

They are bats. Birds do not fly at night. I disagree Blue Moon! The bats make a high pitched sound as they send 'radar'. We go out and watch them at night, and we hear them before we see them.

Well depends what the sound is.... Without a discription I can only guess...
Bird.. Nighthawk.... http://www.kwic.com/~pagodavista/nigthawk.wav
Bat.... http://batcalls.org/prod/uploads/joesze.Eptesicus_fuscus.wav
more bat sounds... http://www.junglewalk.com/sound/Bat-sounds.htm
Owls.... http://www.kwic.com/~pagodavista/hrndowl.wav
more owls... http://www.junglewalk.com/sound/Owl-sounds.htm
PS add4me, many birds do fly at night, mainly those in the family Caprimulgidae (nighthawks and nightjars), and Strigidae/
Tytonidae(typical owls and barn owls)
