Okay, so I've kept from asking questions about relationships, life situations, my interests, etc. but as random as it is, this one is bugging me too much...

In EVERY representation of the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty my friends and I have seen, he is represented as being an egg (see http://images.google.com.au/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=humpty+dumpty for further example), but WHERE in the entire nursery rhyme does it ever actually state that he IS an egg? Why the heck do we all assume this?

yeh.. you got a point.. but can you think of something fragile that brings something to life?
an egg is fragile, and it gives life to a chicken or any animal that hatches eggs..
ahhh... sorry i can't fully get to my point coz i'm having a hard time expressing myself in english..
but i do hope that you get my point..
take care..

I think that the original writter of humpty dumpty probably depicted him as an egg and it just carried on from there. The point of this nursery ryhme is to show that we are all very delicate like and egg and that if we live life on the edge, if we don't heed the warrnings of others we may 'fall' we may have things fall appart and even the most promenent people (kings and royal servants) won't be able to fix it for us. I do believe that the nursery ryhme has a longer version that people don't often hear, but I can't remember it.

You know, I never thought of that, but it's really true. I guess maybe people just assume it, because he falls apart into little pieces or something. And when people grow up hearing the poem, they see pictures of him as an egg, so they just assume that, and tell it to their kids....but I have no idea how it started in the first place.

If you only knew the true meanings to most nursery rhymes you wouldn't tell them to your children.
