I think it's more a case of who YOU think is the best. For me it's Wassily Kandinsky because nothing beats a confusing, abstract painting that's full of colour and life. However a lot of people find the renaissance works the best for reasons that are beyond me. For me, anyone who paints a scene from the bible or a vase of flowers has no imagination. I like most of the works by futurist artists and the vortism artists, especially Percy Wyndham Lewis as he had a knack for showing movement in paintings.

There are so many different styles that it is difficult to compare, but if you look at the paintings Picasso was producing as a young boy it is clear just how gifted he was.
I think a lot has to do with personal taste as well, i would love to have an original Vettriano on my wall but some people don't rate him at all.

There are many great painters in the history of art. Michelangelo, Rafael, Caravaggio, Rubens, Titian, Velasquez... take your pick! Leonardo Di Vinci is probably the most well known.

compare sugar to a transatlantic. Can you see the difference? Can you see the resemblance? Picasso or Da Vinci?
El Greco or Kandinsky? We should base our comparison in the alphabetical order of names or what?

well, Personally I'm a fan of Dali, Magritte and Constable. Doesn't necessarily mean they're the best at it though.
