german shepherds are generally good at retrieving and scent tracking and very intelligent/trainable so that part would probably be decent at hunting but the border collie part of the dog wouldnt be too great at hunting because border collies are herding dogs but hey you never know. i taught my lab/doberman/whippet mix to hunt so you really can never be sure, it depends on the dog.

Herding dogs were bred to engage in pre-hunting behavior, but their instincts have a big swiss-cheese-like hole when it comes to the attack. They track, they stalk, they corner, then... nothing. So, at least in the case of a border collie, they stare. You could get your dog to find game for you, but there's almost no chance you could get him to flush it well. Besides, herding dogs seem to feel protective of the animals they herd, and might react unpredictably if you were to kill the critters in their custody.

nope.. they are hearding dogs not hunters or retrievers... they are smart and you MIGHT be able to train them BUT only if you know what you are doing and your dog has an aptitude for it in the first place

Since both those breeds are herding dogs that's not too likely!
