Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disease that causes problems with breaking down phenylalanine, which is a major ingredient in nurtrasweet (AKA aspartame). If you do not have PKU (you would definitely know by now), then you likely will have no problem with Nutrasweet. All babies in the US are screened as newborns in the hospital for PKU.
As far as whether it is safe for consumption in general, I guess the jury is still out. There is no evidence that it has a specific bad effect, but anything artificial makes some people worry that we may find out it is not safe in the future. All of the studies showing it "causes cancer" were performed on rats where they were given the human equivalent of something like 100 lbs per day of nutrasweet. I would suspect that that much of anything could be deleterious to your health.
And, by the way...doctors do not ask how much diet soda a person with MS drinks. The symptoms of MS are not confused with aspartame side effects. For more info on the lack of truth to that myth, see the National MS Society webpage: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/headlines-aspartame.asp

UNSAFE!
I'm not a doctor, but google "dangers of aspartame" and you'll get quite a surprise. It should have been banned by the FDA but politics got in the way....

Aspartame in large quantities can mimic symptoms of MS. In fact when diagnosing for MS, the doc asks if you drink alot diet soft drinks first. Bascially it breaks down in your body to the almost the same properties as embalming fluid. Nice.

I've always felt it wasnt good for me. It gives me a headache, and i think a good rule of thumb is that anything natural is probably better than taking a chemical.
