I saw the "Da vinci code decoded" and there they say that's a hand without an owner. Whose hand is that?

Leornardo da Vinci is known for his bizar sense of humour. He has done it many times: the eye brows of the Mona Lisa, her strange smile, the resemblance with his own face. To put a hand with a knife on the painting is just making another political statement against the ruling princes and rich families of the various Italian cities. He was known to be a genius, who lived under protection of influential people of the aristocracy, therefore his daring statements were also accepted. It is clear the hand has no owner. It is merely the hand of an assassin involved in some kind of plot. f.e. the family De Medici, who ruled Florence, were known to be involved many times in several conspiracies and assassinations.

I think it's just a case of disproportion on Da Vinci's part. I think the hand is supposed to be that of John/ Mary Magdelene (sitting to our left of Jesus) but because it is proportioned wrong and too far from the body it seems to be an extra hand. I wouldn't for a moment put it past Leonardo Da Vinci to have added something for his own amusement only to leave us wondering, but this is likely either a case of a ***** up or someone later going in and changing something about the painting that makes it now appear wrong. Here's a link where you can view it pretty large so you can see all the details http://www.artchive.com/artchive/L/leonardo/lastsupp.jpg.html

Best wishes

P.s. the reason I didn't say it was the guy in the blue is because his right hand is resting (only partially showing) on the guy infront of him's left shoulder.

Da Vinci Code notwithstanding, I think that written history (in this case the Bible) is subject to opinions and politics, so it must be taken with a grain of salt. So, to answer your question, I would say that Leonardo also had his theories, and yes, I do like to think Mary Magdalene was more important than the male-dominated religions would like to admit. Women have always been mistreated, and if she was important to Jesus, she might have come under attack, even in paintings.

the da vinci decoded isn't really the best reference, personally go look at the painting and search for it, if it is truly there, then probably it isn't a joke, leonardo da vinvi in his paintings was constantly adding little things, in a way to express his thoughts on certain things, so find out for yourself don't anyones word for it, unless theyhave a P.H.D. in renaissance art

The hand belongs to Peter. It appears disembodied as the painting has faded over time. The recent restoration attempted to put it back.

The hand with the knife belongs to the guy in blue with the white beard & hair who is leaning behind the guy with the dark beard and speaking to the beardless guy.

No joke.
