You are taking lessons for all the wrong reasons and if you go out into the street hoping to stop a bullet, you are also out of your mind. What makes you think you can block modern firearms from hitting you,you are not Superman just because you are studying martial arts. The main objective for martial arts is calming of the mind and body and for self defense. I hope you don't go street fighting because-believe me-there is always someone better than you,or they may just shoot you and be done with it.

Well this is a question that I have to answer on a regular basis as an owner of a TaeKwonDo school, and 3rd degree black belt. Fisrt off you need to ask yourself why are you studying martial arts. Is it for fighting skills, love of the arts, exercise, or physical fitness. If it's to become a better street fighter, so may be inthe wrong art. The basics of TaeKwonDo are a great starting point for street self defense, but ask yourself how practical is it to round kick someone in the head.

I not only hold a black belt in TKD but also studied judo, aikido and Jujutsu, and to be honest when it comes to self defense I use more of the other arts because in a real life situation I want my students to be prepared. So you need to talk to your instructor to make sure that they are teaching you what you want to learn.

read THIS. there is NO way that you can block a bullet with tkd. in fact, the way most tkd students are, they're lucky if they can block a person's punch. lol im just stating the truth.

when i was a lower belt i used to think that i would be great at fighting when i get higher belts. when i became a higher belt and saw how p***y the "black belt jr. instructors" are, i realized i was wrong.

and as i experimented more with my punches and kicks, i realized that you can generate much more power into your punches and kicks if you don't do it tkd style. speed roundhouse kicks look cool, but in a real fight, it would just piss your attacker off. they also predispose you to a takedown (which i bet 99% of the tkd population won't be able to stop.)

so you can continue tkd, but buy a heavy bag, experiment with the bag, and remember one thing: what your instructor says are suggestions, not law. if you find a better way to do something, adapt the better way.

yea, so good luck with your training.

*edit*
don't try to fight an armed opponent. it can mean suicide.

TKD is very effiecient in fighting situations if you cut the crap an learn to use the effiecient techniques you learn.

The way to disarm a modern fire arm is simple theres 1000's you just have to practice. The most effiecient way to disarm an opponent in a close range situation is get behind the gun. My favourite way to do this is grab your opponents wrist thats holdign the fire arm and pull them through, as you pull them launch your fist tahts not busy into their head. As hard as possible remember if yoru assailant gets loose your dead. All though its risky otehr than talking some one down its the most effiecient way to disarm some one. I don't recomend trying this any time soon with live ammunition. try with a water pistol the key to gettign able to do it is practice. I'm sorry to say but at a school here they were telling kids to disarm an opponent with a crescent kick... Bad idea cause if i was holding the gun the second i saw you twitch i'de shoot. But if you get a gun pulled on you chances it will be some punk that has no clue what hes doing or why hes doing it for that matter if you can't talk him down. Punch his eye through the back of his head! hope i helped bye

im a first dan black belt and well if they have a gun theres not much u can do. and it depends were u learn if its eficent or not in street fighting. some schools focus on the competition side of tkd. some on the practical. some like to even it out. but if ur good tkd can help u in fighting to someone who never has practise. and blocking a gun shot is nearly imposible if ur out of hitting range from him. but if ur point blank u might be able to fake something and disarm him because if there desperate enough to use a gun there not going to be thinking clearly then. probably panicking or somthing.

it largely depends on you maze-only you can determine how efficient your taekwondo can be in the street. as i said in a thread the other day-there is a right and wrong way to execute a kick/punch-with good tuition and hard work there is no reason why tkd cannot be applied well in the street. onto firearms-now we are talking a different league here-if you can-run!!! leave-get out if it. if you cannot a gun-weilding person can be dis-armed but it takes speed skill and accuracy-and a lot of balls-like i said its up to you freind-and good luck for the simsa (grading test).

Sorry, not very efficient since you use a lot of energy for kicking. But a very good art/sport. Consider adding Hapkido to it which uses locks, throws, etc. As to fire arm defense...yea give them what you want. You ONLY fight against a fire arm when there is absolutely no choice.

Very efficient against the average person. There are blocking techniques that can be used for disarming someone with a pistol or other handheld weapon, but use at extreme caution and only if absolutely necsessary.

OK, yes your right i cant block a bullet sure. but look at this, if i study correctly, I'll learn to read people's movements (ask your sensei about reading peoples movements). now have a friend with dart gun (or something like that) so far away from you, have him draw it from different places on his body. the average police officer has their gun on their side strapped into place. the average person can run up and tackle him before (from about 12 feet away) he could get a shot off. the untrained marksman is no different. sure you face a man with a gun chances are your going to die. but i much rather poke him in one of his eyes before i die than die without honor, ya'know.
