A Push-Up is an Isometric Exercise meaning that you are pushing up and down your own body weight. The more you push-ups you can do will increase your strength, but unless you increase the weight you are pushing up and down, your strength increase will reach a limit.

Now, you can make push-ups do more things for you if you alternate sets of push-ups from narrow to shoulder width, to feet elevated on a chair, bench, or stool.

You can also do more push-ups by having a little fun. Take a normal pack of playing cards. Every number on the card is how many push-ups you do. The Jack is 11, Queen 12, King 13, Ace
is 14, and Jocker 15. Everytime your not doing anything, shuffle up the cards, pick one and drop down and do the amount of push-ups on the card.

You can also do push-ups like sets and reps in weight lifting
for example: 6 sets of 12 reps (push-ups).

Push-ups will build-up your shoulders, chest, and arms. But it will not add muscle mass (max 1/4 to 1 inch depending on the muscle group). It will however if continously done with sit-ups, chin-ups, bench dips build a very toned and muscular body if you do not have allot of fat on you.

A good strength test is as follows:

1. Prone position
2. Do 5 push-ups
3. Do 4 push-ups
4. Do 3 push-ups
5. Do 2 push-ups
6. Do 1 push-up
7. Do 1 push-up
8. Do 2 push-ups
9. Do 3 push-ups
10. Do 4 push-ups
11. Do 5 push-ups

If you can do the above strength exercise....congradulations!

As far as is a push-up a cardio exercise. Any exercise that you can do over 15 reputitions becomes a cardio exercise in one way or another.

It is a weighted lifting exercise using your own body weight. It will tone but not build muscle like free weights.

Push-ups are a good toner for triceps/lats/ and chest for a beginner and a good between set exercise for more experiened lifters. There are tons of ways to do push ups that emphasize different parts of the body. As someone said before if you do them fast you can get a good short burst cardio workout.

Yes to both questions. You won't develop a lot of mass by doing pushups, but they will work to tone your body. They will also help you to maintain your strength levels. I do pushups between sets sometimes.
