These procedures are all tested on animals before they are attempted on humans. At many research hospitals, we use a variety of animals, from mice to monkeys. We try to find 'standard' animals of same weight, age, etc so that we can duplicate the test or experiment numerous times without failure, and then when we get to the first patient we need to explain that it is experimental, and such procedures remain experiemental until we are confident of the success of the procedure. Many things are possible but have been inconsistent in results so they are not used. However, an accident or an emergency situation is different and we examine the damage and have to improvise on the spot. This is especially true with gunshot wounds or car accidents. You learn basic surgical technique but nothing can prepare you for the trauma of such injuries or guide you what to do. We rely on many years of training and experience. One of my patients slid down the pavement, having been thrown from his motorcycle, on his face. It took three of us working together to sort out the problem, an ophthalmologist, an oral surgeon and myself to piece him together again.

Unfortunately or fortunately it is TRIAL and ERROR. Different cases need different solutions. Every heart surgery isn't exactly the same and every time a doctor does one he/she learns more and more and is able to adjust and improvise to get better and faster. During procedures they run into circumstances than may make them think "Had I had another tool that was bent this way with something bent that way at this angle....I could have done this without causing that." A new invention is born.

Surgeons don't rely on their studies alone. They have to spend millions in order to research and study the latest and advance technology needed by the people nowadays in order to achieve good results.Hence,if the latest technology works, the millions of dollar they spent will return back to them and even double.
