Why do muslim women wear veils to protect themselves from men? Shouldn't it be the men protecting the women???

They aren't protecting themselves from men...they are protecting the men from distraction...anyway, that is how it was explained to me by a gentleman from Pakistan.

It's to protect themselves from MEN in general and their perversion and to protect men from being perverted. it's also about honor and dignity and selfworth. why is it that non-muslims themselves call unclothed women "cheap"? did you ever ask yourself that question. Also look at nuns and orthodox jewish women..they cover as well why don't you criticize them? they are obligated by the laws of GOD to cover therefore muslim women don't do anything different from the other women. we just do it and you don't accept it even though it's a practice accepted throughout the world.

also by women protecting the men the men will in turn protect them. it's 50/50. the beauty of islam is that everyone has a job to do. we all complete one another.

Muslim men are so easily excited that women have to protect themselves by wearing the veils. The men can't protect them because they have little or no control over their carnal impulses.

When muslim women are raped they have to have four male witnesses (in muslim countries) to prove they were raped. Without the witnesses any muslim woman who goes to the authorities and says she's been raped often end up being jailed for adultery. The lucky ones get about 100 lashes, the others get stoned to death.

They wear the veil not only to protect, but to make the body parts and hair not obvious to men, so as to keep her precious parts hidden from any eyes. this is the safest way.
And yes men should protect women, but what if the woman don't have a man of her own like a bro or father, or husband?
the veil is to value the woman for whats in her mind, not whats her body look like.

Well, I dont think that the purpose of veils is to protect themselves from men. Veils are put in the olden times to stop man from having the urge or desire for sex. In the olden times, when men just must have it when they saw pretty women, too much unfortunate events take place. Secondly the veil was used to protect them from the blowing of sand. Seriously speaking, I personally think that in todays age,man cannot be trusted to protect women. Everybody have the responsibility to protect oneself.

Why do nuns wear veils?Why do Jewish women cover their hair? I think in all monotheistic religions God orders the women to cover their hairs. Some people force it upon their women and the others don't, whatever the case, the women in ALL societies are the weaker gender and they can not defend themselves! The faithful woman does not go out in full make up and showing skin because her intention is to do about her work and not attract men to her for sex or love.

It's in the spirit of modesty. And for most woman not in oppressive country's it is a free will decision. Muslims are not the only ones who wear head coverings other religions do as well. Amish, Quakers, Jewish, and some Christians wear head coverings. And male Muslim have modest traditions as well.

look i want to say it clearly that every religion has its own culture n custom. but one thing is sure that it may be men are more physically strong than women but this doesn't means that women are not capable to protect their-selves coz strength also needs mental support and i thing that women too has this spirit to take care of themselves.
