Try turning off your flash. Have the people stand in good light and maybe it will look more natural.

This is caused from a Hard Flash from a camera. There is 2 easy ways that you can correct this process. (1) Use a softer flash -> Less Bright or directional, or (2) use a powdered Make-up to soften the blow of the flash. Often times I will just direction my flash to bounce off another source.

yeah i also think its because of the flash usually the places the flash hits it turns out brighter if its light where ur taking the pictures try turning the flash off

It is definitely reflection, and it depends on where your light meter is focussing (this is something you can't control on point and shoot cameras). Try aiming slightly higher or slightly lower than the face.

Exactly, some persons look really brighter than they really look bcoz their faces r photogenic in nature.
