What kind of dog.? I have been a breeder/ show/ obedience. of different kinds of dogs in the Last thirty years.
The most important question to ask. is what kind of lifestyle do you have. Where do you live, house or apt. How many people living with you. and if there are children.
As you know there are breeds as small as yorkies with high maintenaince or chiuauha with little. There are great danes. that require a house. and love kids. ut can destroy a house if bored. and learn bad manners if you don't train them properly.
Think in proportion to what you have available as far as time. finances. and room. How much patence do you have. Are you high energy or mellow.layed back. You want to go with a breed that suits you. and be your best friend.
I have had Great Danes Harlequin for 30 years. my last one died in October. I live in an apartment and cannot have another, but i do have a Standard Poodle. If i was not a groomer. in the past. I would be paying 100 dollars ever 8 weeks to groom her.
Hunting breeds like to hunt. so if you don't have a lot of room to run. or activities they will invent some devious way of using their instincts.like chasing any cat or car.
the best way to decide is go the American Kennel Club website. look up breeds. the description. . compare to what you yourself want. go see puppies from different littlers. for health. proof of papers. if buying a purebred. and a health certificate. good for 48 hours. at least.
I have had **** zu's maltese. Wiemaraner's great danes. etc Irish wolfhound. I love big dogs. but they need a lot more of everything including food and vet bills.
Stay away from agressive breeds that highly intelligent. for if they are not trained they can be unpredictable.
Don't buy any puppy.until you are sure it is one you can live with forever. a Dog is a big investment. for it's lifespan and depends on you for everything. and it will give back 110% of love devotion and loyalty. If you explain your lifestyle and loves i can certainly head you in the direction of some great breeds.
also Craigs List has some very interesting combo breeds. Do not pay exorbinant prices for mixed breeds.
And if you decide on a rescue. Great. .. or your local humane society. see who Loves You. dogs sometimes pick their owners. star

Research what kind of dog will fit your needs. Do you want high energy (jack russell) or lower energy (golden retreivers) You should not get a dog until you have researched these things and researched how to select a puppy and care for it. All dogs are great if matched with the right owner, none is better than the other. Most dog training books will begin with a wsection on selecting a puppy/ dog. I personally prefer mutts and have had everything from Rottie mixes to a Great Pyranese mix and a pointer mix. The diversity of personalities is great.

I personally would go to the animal shelter and adopt a dog! I know from personal experience that some of those animals have been abused or neglected by previous owners, and the animals are so very grateful for just some love and attention. My dog is a mutt, but she is the best dog I have owned! I have bought from breeders and pet stores, but the greatest feeling is rescuing an animal and showing it the love it deserves! Good luck, hope you find the perfect best friend!

It depends on what you like and how much space you have. Some say large breeds are not appropriate for apartments. I believe the contrary. Small dogs zoom all over the place while large dogs learn to be careful navagating smaller spaces. Retreivers and Shepards are very good with children. Labs are good too, but they are high energy dogs. Smaller dogs can be temperamental. It depends on your needs. All dogs take lots of care and attention.
I suggest taking a trip to a PetSmart or other store to purchase a book about different breeds. They often have training sessions for dogs and you can speak to the trainers about different dogs.
Don't forget to check with your county about licensing, tags, and required shots.
Good luck and remember this is a BIG commitment!

The best type of dog to get is a toy dog a small dog. I have a maltese and they are the most loveable dogs you can get. But a toy dog is the best. They are small. They can sleep with you cuddle with you when you on sitting on the couch and when you take them out for a walk everyone will love your dog because its so small. So if you dont want a big dog and all the clean up you after to do after a big dog then I say get a toy dog and its much much easier to give them a bath believe me it is.

well it depends, if u wanna small dog that can just be ur conpanian and stuff like that, its best to get a small dog like a pomeranian or a yorkshire, AKA yorkie. But they are both friendly and playfull and dont get very big. But if u want a big dog try a cocker spanile or something like that but here is a site that i used to help pick a dog, the site has pictures every dog breed, information and lots of other stuff.
http://www.dogsindepth.com/list_of_all_dog_breeds.html
P.S. The dog i picked was a pomeranian, a white pomeranian. Hope I helped!!

I'd have to say a dachshund if you want a lap dog. It really depends on many factors from your home size to your family as to what breed is best suited for you. If you live in an apartment with limited space for a dog to run and play then definitely a dachshund or other smaller breed. However if you have a large yard then you may want a larger breed like a Labrador retriever.

You need to get yourself an all-breed book and find photos of dogs you like, then you research that breed to see if it would fit in with your family lifestyle - energy level, grooming needs, size of dog, personality traits, etc. Or you could go to a dog show and look at the dogs in person, talk to some owners of dogs you like and find out about them that way.
No one can tell you what kind of dog you should get without knowing a whole lot about your family's lifestyle and what you want in a dog. Good luck finding one.

Go to the animal shelter and find a puppy or young dog. Mixed breeds have less health issues and are great dogs as they get the best of the breeds that they are mixed with. I have rescued 2 dogs (german shepherd/shar pei mix) and they are the best dogs I have ever owned. They are great with children and other dogs. Whichever dog you choose at a shelter you can "try it out "
and get to know it before buying!
