These essentially working terrier comes originally from te border country between England and Scotland, and is a game, active breed fully capable of following a horse and expected to go to ground after a fox. The border terrier club was formed in 1920, the same year in which the breed gained English Kennel Club recognition. In the past the border terrier has also been known as the Coquedale or Reedwater terrier after areas in which the breed was known.

a border terrier became established around 1880 , they did not become a breed in thier own until the middle of the 19th century , when they became distinct from the other terrier breeds in the border region, the area where northumberland and roxburghshire in scotland join. it is belived that the border , bedlington and dandie dinmont terriers , who orginated from that region , are distantly related .
